You Are What You’re Told

Introduction

Transgender in the  dictionary is defined as is “denoting or relating to a person whose self-identity does not conform unambiguously to conventional notions of male or female gender.” The LGBT defines it as “umbrella term to refer to all people who do not identify with their assigned gender at birth or the binary gender system. This includes transsexuals, cross-dressers, genderqueer, drag kings, drag queens, two-spirit people, and others. Some transgender people feel they exist not within one of the two standard gender categories, but rather somewhere between, beyond, or outside of those two genders.”  The differences in the definitions represent many of the issues around trying to integrate the transgender population into the fabric of American society. The specificity that is being demanded by the transgender community is creating a situation in which there is no way to accommodate them. The insistence on multiple criteria and intersectional understanding of their status prevents mainstream America from being able to formulate a working plan for the population.

There are a group of people like The TERFS and Chris Christie  who believe that society should not be rearranged to accommodate transgender people. Rather, they argue that if we do accommodate their needs to feel equal in society it will throw off the balance of things.

It’s been an ongoing battle for transgender people to do something as simple as use the restroom of the gender they identify as. The LGBT has even compared it to the 1880 jim crow acts. Now 26% of americans believe that your gender is self-determination , so a good chunk but not the majority. 59% believe that a person’s gender is what’s assigned to you at birth. This is all for a reason as, americans tend to lean more towards what most leaders/influential figures say.

A big question is what is the most effective strategy for the emerging transgender population in the U.S ? It has been an everyday battle for groups of people such as the TREFS to fight against the idea that your gender is all on your Self-determination. Groups and people who support similar ideas like the TREFS say that people who identify as transgender have psychological issues. They get there following and support by  the use  logical evidence such as stating the obvious in their ideals  “ you’re male or female , this is decided by what private part you’re born with not with what you want.

The Who’s and Why’s

The group I mentioned earlier called the TERFS are an organization founded in the 1970’s and they are against the idea of transgender as a whole. Their main objective exclude transgender people from society. They do this because they feel that if people who identify as transgender feel left out then they will abolish the idea transgender as a whole.

They’ve supported several exclusion acts over the years and continue to today. In 1980 they put forward an effort to end all access that trans people have to health care. They were the first group to bring the trans restroom topic to the political world. They argued that transgender people shouldn’t be able to just walk in whatever restroom they want, you only should be able to go to the restroom that matches the gender you are assigned at birth.

The TERFs Are typically viewed as the bad guys. There are reasons for this, there are many cases involving hate acts towards transgender people that lead back to them. Although they say that their only motivation is to end the idea of being able to change your gender and nothing else, and even coming out and saying that they only intend on using peaceful methods on getting their points, they still attract people who feel a really strong hate for people who are transgender and are willing to do something as extreme as a hate crime to get there point across. Plus the TERFs come out and say very harsh things about trans people like “Your just a science experiment” and many more. Here is Robin tyler telling a moment of a time when they got beaten by a TERF while try to defend their friend Beth Eliot,  “We defended Beth Eliot. Robin Morgan came up with this horrible speech and when Beth went on stage to play her guitar and sing, [TERFs] started threatening her. Patty [Harrison] and I jumped on stage and we got hit, because they came onto the stage to physically beat her.” Hearing all this makes it hard to not label them the bad guys. They seem to be doing nothing right with their power.

There biggest weakness is the name that they created for themselves. Because of all these stories flying around about them they don’t have any real power. No outside help from any different organizations are coming their way , they aren’t taken seriously on a political level, and they even have a web page that records all the negative things to their name listed on it , And It’s more popular than their many actual websites. The only people who actually seem to listen to them are very small christian groups, and most christian groups despite having similar beliefs about trans people still go against them. All in All this group doesn’t seem to have good strategies on how to accommodate the incoming transgender population in the US.

Now nobody panic I know that that last entry was pretty harsh and I promise you this next one won’t be as harsh, but it will be disappointing. Give a round of applause for Chris Christie everyone’s favorite republican bully yay. For those who are unfamiliar with him let’s go over background knowledge on him shall we. Chris Christie is the current governor of New Jersey. He is looked at as kind of a bully in the political world. He’s said things like “Warren Buffett should just write a check and shut up” and “I mean please guys will you just take a bat out on her for once” and plenty more. He is currently running for president of the united states .

Mr.Christie here believes that the idea of having transgender is confusing for the children and makes life a lot less straightforward. He uses the restroom topic as an example, “Men go to men’s rooms, women go to women’s rooms” he also added “And I don’t think we should be making life more confusing for our children.” He feels that most american households teach their kids that you’re a boy or girl no choice. In order for this to become an acceptable thing from him he would need every american household to teach their kids about transgender people. Not every american household is going to want to teach their children about this.

In terms of power for Chris Christie he has a lot. He is the governor of New Jersey anything that is not a federal law he can overthrow it. He made it illegal for people to chose what bathroom they want to use, you use the restroom that is the as the gender you are assigned at birth otherwise you will be penalized. He even vetoed the that would allow transgender people to change their gender on their birth certificates.  He as the kind of power the TERFs wish they had.

Case Study

In our case study we take a look at the incident that happened between a TERF group named the Gorgons that attempted to kill oliva records. This was all witnessed By a woman named sandy stone. She saw that the Gorgons all had weapons and soon most of them taken by security. As soon as the Oliva went onstage the Gorgons screamed  “GORGONS” and charged the stage leaving many people hurt and injured. Before this concert the TERFs were sending all kind of death threats towards Oliva telling them that if they even think about coming to perform there they will be serious problems.

This is one of the many ways that the TERFs can exclude transgender people from society. By doing this they can also make certain people who identify as transgender feel scared or out a place. They are willing to go to extreme measures to get there point across.

Quite Honestly this is how some people in the world feel about Transgender people. These are the ways that people want to deal with transgender people. They feel that transgender being shouldn’t feel welcomed into this world.

Conclusion

The TERFs and Chris Christie and many other leaders and organizations like them have their backs against the wall when it comes to not only their idea but there opinion as well. Be honest while you were reading this most of the time you were probably thinking “wow these people are assholes”. If you weren’t then you are probably on the same page as the many TERF groups (hopefully not as extreme as them) or Chris Christie. But these people are the minority when it comes to their opinion .

If things continue to go the way they are soon transgender people will be welcomed into society with equal benefits. Yes there will always be people like Chris Christie But they will be the outsiders. So in the future expected these people to lose.

I found this comment interesting: “if we do accommodate their needs to feel equal in society it will throw off the balance of things.” The idea that there is some sort of gender balance that can be thrown off is almost funny. Like, what, everyone is going to decide to gender swap? I feel like these people need to check their statistics on the actual number of trans people….
