Bolster border security

Many people believe that illegal Immigration is a serious issue in the United states. It is claimed that 11 million undocumented immigrants now living in the U.S are causing the population to grow by 700,000 people per year. This shows how hazardously open our borders are. Although a majority of illegal immigrants come to the U.S. for a better life, many people argue it also weakens the national security environment, and that it creates a cover for terrorists and criminals.

All of these arguments are pathos-based, in that they try to play off of people’s fear. This is an example for why people may be concerned about illegal immigration.

The Who

Ted Cruz was born on December 22, 1970 in Canada to an American Mother and Cuban father. He graduated from Princeton University in 1992 and from Harvard Law school in 1995. Cruz’s previous occupation was a lawyer a few years before getting into politics, and in 2015 he began to run for president. As president, Cruz wants to secure borders because he believes illegal immigrants have caused serious issues that affect our safety. Cruz stated that, “We have a serious immigration problem in America. The American people understand that we must reverse the policies that invite criminals and terrorists to defy the law, allow manipulation of our generous immigration system, and reward illegal immigrants for their actions.”

As some claim, not everyone should enter the U.S. due to border patrol and America refusing to allow people from a different country in, without being reasonably considered a potential terrorist. Cruz agrees that the solution to illegal immigration is to build a wall. As Cruz stated,

“Build a wall that works. The unsecured border with Mexico invites illegal immigrants, criminals, and terrorists to tread on American soil. Millions of people from all over the world, including from hostile nations and terrorist havens, have been apprehended at our southern border – and many who make it through are never caught”.

Cruz means by this that the illegal immigrants that make it through the U.S. border never get caught making the risks for terrorist attacks higher and higher. It also allows us to acknowledge the fact that the United States needs to increase their border security.

Marco Rubio was born on May 28, 1971. He graduated from the University of Florida and later from University of Miami School of Law. Before he became a Republican nominee running for President, he became a young United States Senator in 2009. In Marco Rubio’s book, American Dreams: Restoring Economic Opportunity for Everyone, he states that he wants to first secure the border. He addresses the major issue of the border security, “our immigration system itself is chaotic. Entire sectors of our southern border are not secure, creating not just an immigration problem but a serious humanitarian and national security one as well”.

Border patrol has become one of the main topics of controversy regarding the 2016 election. Issues regarding terrorism have also plagued the face of political discussions. The US Customs  and border patrol has been quoted stating “The priority mission of the Border Patrol is preventing terrorists and terrorists weapons, including weapons of mass destruction, from entering the United States.”

Marco Rubio’s motivations are his parents who were immigrants. He identifies with the current immigrants because if his parents had not migrated to America, he would not be an American citizen. I believe this makes his intentions genuine because the issue is something close to him.

Marco Rubio influences a large demographic of white Republicans because he is a Republican presidential candidate. He has a lot of power when he broadcasts his beliefs because of this. He has made immigration reform a popular topic to debate about.

Case Study

The case study that is going to be presented is the Israeli border with Egypt. The fence is 5 meters in height and is topped with barbed wire. It is supported by dozens of radars that are deployed along the border to issue alerts about possible crossings while the potential infiltrators are still kilometers away. Five different types detect people at ranges from 300 m. up to 20 km., and vehicles at up to 40km.  It is arguably the most secure and technologically advanced border in the world. In 2013 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reported that illegal crossings dropped 99.9%, from 2,000 people per month to only two.

If the U.S. can make its borders as secure as the Israeli border, then the amount of illegal immigrants and potential criminals that enter will decrease dramatically. Israel secured its borders to prevent terrorists and potential terrorists to come in. Although the U.S. is not getting suicide bombed from its Southern border we should not factor it out completely. For the same reasons that Israel bolstered its border the U.S. should do the same.

The Present Borders

For now the border is on a plan to be reformed and depending on who comes to office, will be handled differently. Right now under President Obama’s jurisdiction the number of border patrol agents is at its highest. This means that the U.S. is making an effort to secure its borders and has been for some time.

The republican plan for the border includes the “Secure our borders first act” which adds additional fencing, roads and technology. The bill will also have more funding to aviation assets (aircraft equipment) and the national guard. It will also require independent border security experts to verify that the border is secure, which will take border security out of the hands of the department of homeland security and out of the hands of politicians.

The idea that you can “build a wall” reminds me of Monty Python movies. Or China. They built a wall visible from space and that didn’t work. #weshouldlearnfromhistory
